Smaller world effect
the recent acquisition of Skype, an internet peer-to-peer telephony software company for a price tag of US$4.1 billion dollars goes to show that the world is getting flatter- using the term coined by Michael Freeman.
This acquisition play can radically change the telecom industry and set the stage for eBay to be the next telecom darling.
Whilst at company level, any company for that matters, must have strategic focus on where the company want to be in the next 10-20 years. The acquisition of key technology partner can tip the equation.
Focus on 'core competency' is not enough any more, any company must make adjustment and take bearing more so often given the changing dynamics of today's marketplace.
Skype is a disruptive technology; very much like what linux proposition have done to the IT industry. It effectively led to a shake-up, to such extend that it has done earn some converts who are non-believers in the first place.
