Johannes von Maltke, a nineteenth century Prussian general influenced by the renowned military theorist, Karl von Clausewitz. von Multke argued that detailed plans usually fail, because circumstances inevitably change. A successful strategist, he wrote, always must be willing to adapt; even broad goals must be flexible enough to respond to new events.
